Frequently Asked Questions
Is hands-on training required for HAZWOPER?
Yes! HAZWOPER training, specifically in the 40-hour Hazardous Waste Site Worker, the 24-hour HAZMAT Emergency Response training, and the 8-hour refresher training. According to the OSHA Standards Interpretation Letter dated April 23, 2021, “it is important that the training include an opportunity for employees to become familiar with or to refresh their skills using PPE and safe practices in a non-hazardous setting.” Additionally, OSHA states, “the actual hands-on training component of an employee’s HAZWOPER training should occur during the initial HAZWOPER training course and must be completed before the employee’s three-day field experience component. Can I take an online HAZWOPER course and complete the hands-on training with The HAZMAT Academy?
Although we may offer the hands-on only course, OSHA states in their Standard Interpretation Letter dated April 23, 2021, “the actual hands-on training component of an employee’s HAZWOPER training should occur during the initial HAZWOPER training course and must be completed prior to the employee’s three-day field experience component.” Standard Interpretation Letter
If I have a beard, can I still participate?
A seal must be formed between the facemask and the skin to create a proper seal with a positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Facial hair will not allow for a proper seal. If a person is unable to complete the
hands-on training in donning personal protective equipment, the lack of training will be documented on the certificate of completion.
I don’t have a medical clearance. Can I still participate in HAZWOPER training?
We take your safety very seriously at The HAZMAT Academy. Please ensure you are medically qualified to wear a respirator, carry up to 45 pounds, and physically fit to wear a Level A hazmat suit. If you cannot wear the personal protective equipment, the lack of training will be documented on the certificate of completion.
What do I need to bring to class?
Clothing: HAZWOPER training combines lectures and hands-on learning. Comfortable clothes that allow you to sweat and move about in hazmat suits, such as socks and closed-toe shoes, are important. Socks are required to don the hazmat suits.
Study Materials: the study materials will be provided electronically or in print format (your choice). Please bring a computer or tablet to access online documents if that is your preferred way to receive materials. Wifi is provided in classrooms only.
Food and Drinks: Although water will be offered, you should bring snacks and drinks to maintain energy and hydration throughout the day. Wearing hazmat suits is exhausting; you will want to replenish your body with healthy options. You will not have time to leave for lunch.
